Obituary for James G. Butler

Butler, James (Jay) G. – On Tues September 13, 2022, Jay lost his short battle with advanced stages of cancer. Jay was born in Brooklyn on November 5, 1953 and attended elementary school in Lindenhurst and Montauk, NY. He graduated from St. John the Baptist HS, West Islip, NY. Jay attended college at different institutions on Long Island acquiring three years of study. He served in the US Army for three years and served overseas in Japan in military intelligence as an assistant case officer. While in Japan he was an all-star shortstop with the Pacific Exchange baseball team. He also was stationed on several military posts stateside in a variety missions for Army Intelligence. After an honorable discharge Jay worked as a railway policeman with Conrail; and as an investigator and police officer with the railroad he worked throughout the New York Metropolitan area and lived in Ulster County for two years. After his service with Conrail he joined the NYPD where he was was a patrol officer, a pistol trafficking investigator and was promoted to sergeant and served in the Bronx and Queens as a police supervisor. After his retirement from NYPD Jay joined the Suffolk County DA’s Office as a Detective Investigator where he made numerous arrests involving a variety of fraudulent schemes. Jay loved his family and especially enjoyed the holidays each year; and was a sports enthusiast with a special affinity for Notre Dame football games. He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Patricia A. and his son, Thomas. Jay is survived by his sons, Liam (Sheanna) and Sean and three grandchildren, Declan, Kieran and Delaney, his brother Michael (Elizabeth) and his sister Mary Beth Gramazio (Raymond). Visiting hours at the Lindenhurst Funeral Home are on Sunday, September 18, 2022 from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm. The funeral Mass is Monday, September 19, 2022 at 9:30 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, S. Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst, NY. Interment to follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
