Obituary for James J. Kent

After a 2-year battle with lymphoma, James Kent, a resident of Copiague, NY, has died on November 10, 2023 at the age of 79. James is survived by his loving wife Theresa, sister Sheila, sons Anthony (Brigid) and Steven, daughter Jeanmarie (Nicholas), grandchildren ToniAnn and John, and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends who loved him. He was predeceased by his son John and brother George.

James was born on July 28, 1944 in the Bronx, NY, and in 1948 he was adopted by George and Catherine Kent of Greenlawn, NY. He proudly served his country in the US Army, fighting in the Vietnam war from December of 1966 through February of 1968. James was an intelligent, hard-working man who owned a pool construction and maintenance business for over 40 years. He’s best known in his industry as the Leakmaster. He had a love of sports always rooting for the Giants and Yankees; however, his interest in those team paled in comparison to his love of the New York Rangers. James always enjoyed learning and read many books on world history especially books on the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War II. At 7pm you could find him answering almost every question on that night’s episode of Jeopardy! To relax he would work on his ever-growing stamp collection or play a game with his family. James was a quiet man but never shied away from a conversation about history, current events, and politics. He also had a great sense of humor, and a great-niece once described him as “the funniest man on the planet”. In addition to donating to many charities, James volunteered his time serving breakfast to the homeless at his church and working their annual feast.

James faced many challenges and struggles throughout his life, but most would never know because he didn’t complain about it. He had a deep love for his family, and always put their needs before his own. Heaven has gained its hardest-working angel.

Services to celebrate James’ life will be held on Wednesday, November 15th from 2-4pm and 7-10pm at the Lindenhurst Funeral Home (424 S. Wellwood Ave, Lindenhurst, NY). The burial mass will be held on Thursday, November 16th at 9:45am at Our Lady of Assumption church in Copiague, NY. (1 Molloy Ave, Copiague, NY).

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation in memory of James to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society https://www.lls.org/ or Hope for the Warriors http://www.hopeforthewarriors.org.
