Obituary for Jean M. Sheppard (Hayes)

Jean M. Sheppard, 82, of Lindenhurst, New York, passed away on November 2, 2023 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip.

Jean was born on Halloween (October 31) in 1941 to Raymond and Mary Hayes in Queens, New York. Jean was the youngest of four girls and was the baby of the family until 1954, when her younger brother was born.

Jean had the honor of being one of two students from her parish selected to attend Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School for Girls in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating in 1958, she trained to become a nurse and began working at the New York Foundling Hospital.

In 1962, Jean married Thomas C. Sheppard. After a brief stint in South Ozone Park in Queens, they purchased a home in Baldwin, New York, where they raised their family. Jean and Tom went on to have four children: Paul (1963), Kathleen (1964), Patricia (1966) and Thomas (1969). During those years, Jean was not only a full-time mother, but was active in the Plaza School PTA, taught weekly CCD religious education classes, and volunteered at St. Christopher’s Church.

After a long struggle with pancreatic cancer, Jean’s husband Tom passed away in 1979. At the time, he was one of the first hospice patients at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre, New York. Emboldened by this experience, Jean went back to school, graduated from Nassau Community College, and began a long and successful career as a registered nurse. She also continued her volunteer activities, co-chairing the St. Christopher’s Feast and serving on the Hospice Board at Mercy Hospital. She also became an avid traveler and enjoyed many trips to Europe and around the United States with her fellow DSC travelers, friends and family.

Jean moved to the Villas at Narragansett in Lindenhurst, New York, in 2004. She retired in 2011, continued traveling and served as the matriarch of her ever-growing family, including the grandchildren who knew her as “Grandma” or “Gaboo.” In 2021, she welcomed her first great-grandchild, to whom she was “GG.”

In addition to her husband, Jean was predeceased by her father, Raymond Hayes, her mother, Mary Hayes, her sisters Patricia Craven and Mary Peters, and various aunts, uncles, in-laws and friends. In 2021, she lost her youngest child, Thomas Gerard Sheppard and, in 2022, her granddaughter Brianna Sheppard passed away.

Jean is survived by her sister, Eileen Hendrick (and her husband Ronn), of Sarasota, Florida; her brother Raymond Hayes (and his wife, Mary), of Lancaster, Ohio; her children Paul Sheppard (and his fiancé Steffie Ingalls), of Endwell, New York; Kathy Fernandez (and her husband Carlos), of Crofton, Maryland; and Tricia Buckley (and her husband, Mike), of Lindenhurst, New York; her grandchildren Michael Sheppard (and his wife, Mona Chaudhry), Kyle Sheppard (and his fiancé Megan Nieto), Cailean Sheppard, Fiona Buckley, Mick Buckley, Declan Buckley, Sinead Buckley, and Amanda Ferndandez; her great-granddaughter Naya Chaudhry-Sheppard; and dozens of nieces, nephews and extended family.

Jean’s family will welcome visitors at the Lindenhurst Funeral Home at 424 S. Wellwood Avenue, on Sunday, November 5, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be offered on Monday, November 6, at 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church, 210 S. Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst.
