Obituary for Joan Virginia Kienle

Joan Virginia Kienle (nee Wegener) passed away on February 2, 2024 with her family at her side in Williamsburg, Virginia. Joan was born on March 31, 1934 in Bronx, New York, to German immigrants Richard and Gertrude Wegener. At a young age, she moved with her family to Lindenhurst, New York, where Joan attended Lindenhurst Schools and St. John’s Lutheran Church. Joan was very active in High School, participating in several sports, and was very proud to be a varsity cheerleader with the Class of 1951. Joan met Frederick Kienle while still in High School, and they married on Fred’s return from his Army enlistment in 1954. Joan graduated Long Island College Hospital Nursing School and worked as a Registered Nurse at Southside Hospital, in Bay Shore, New York, for many years. An active member of the Village of Lindenhurst Mayor’s Beautification Society, Joan was also very supportive of her husband Fred’s work as Chief of the Lindenhurst Fire Department and later as the Mayor of the Village of Lindenhurst. While Joan and Fred enjoyed traveling the world to visit their son Frederick and Daughter-in-law Laura’s family at numerous Army assignments, they decided to relocate to Williamsburg, Virginia to be closer to their grandchildren in 2003. After the death of her husband of 64 years, Joan was active in the Brookdale Chambrel Senior Living Community in Williamsburg until her passing. Joan is survived by her son, Colonel (USA, retired) Frederick R. Kienle, his wife Laura, grandchildren Lauren Janney (Scott) , Elizabeth Hoffman (Major Benjamin), and Major Maria Kienle, USA (Captain Brittany) and six great-grandchildren (Freddy, Lily, Teddy, Tommy, Andy, Zoey). Joan will be interred with her husband in Breslau Cemetery in Lindenhurst, New York.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to the Mayor’s Beautification Society of Lindenhurst, 430 South Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst, NY, 11757.
