Obituary for Mark L. McCandless
McCandless, Mark L, age 73, of Lindenhurst, NY passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family on Friday, February 10, 2023.
Beloved husband of 52 years to Georgena. Loving father to Thomas (Lynne), Kirsten, Deborah (Jason), Maureen (Michael), Andrew (Nicole) and Stuart (Pamela). Cherished grandfather to 20 and adored great-grandfather to Mark Lawrence, his namesake. Brother to Jill (Richard) and Paul (deceased); Son to Lawrence (Joan) McCandless (both deceased); Uncle to Bryan (Kate) McCandless.
Arriving on Long Island in 1974 as a Scout executive for the Boy Scouts of America, Mark had always been an active member of his community. He served as both Cubmaster and Scoutmaster to a generation of boys, guiding many to achieve Scouting’s highest rank – Eagle Scout. In later years, Mark served as a baseball coach for his sons’ Lindenhurst teams and delighted in coaching kids to develop their love and passion for sport. He was equally committed to the success of Lindenhurst High School’s JROTC program in which all of his children were enrolled; he volunteered countless hours to help create memorable events for the program and its cadets. A 2nd career in promotional advertising as a start-up business demonstrated Mark’s pride in being involved in the local business community, particularly as a member of Lindenhurst’s BNI where, as a former Board member, he served in every position; his dedication to customer satisfaction was well documented!
Mark’s greatest joys came from spending time with his family, exploring Long Island and rooting for the NY Giants, both at home and in person. His vision of a perfect summer evening included a tall glass of iced tea, a spirited card game or a noisy round of Yahtzee with his grandchildren on the porch. He possessed a kind and steady presence coupled with a sly sense of humor.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, 2-15-23 from 2-4pm and 7- 9pm at Lindenhurst Funeral Home located at 424 S. Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst, NY.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Kilian Roman Catholic Church located at 485 Conklin Street, Farmingdale, NY on Thursday, 2-16-23 at 11:00am.
Cremation and Internment will be private.
