My grandfather Leo was many things. He was an Army veteran who served his country honorably during the Korean War. He was a dredge engineer who worked long, hard hours at sea to support his wife and seven children, never calling in sick no matter how bad he felt because for Grandpa, family came first. My Grandpa loved to joke around and tell stories. He had experienced so much in his life and had infinite tales and anecdotes to share. He was a jack-of-all-trades and could fix anything from cars to boats to appliances, whether the job required simple tinkering, or a full day’s labor. Grandpa shared this vast knowledge of handiwork, home repair, and craftsmanship with his sons and sons-in-law alike. He loved his wife and children dearly. He never raised his hand or his voice in anger. He graciously offered his input, advice, and wisdom. My own father, who grew up without a dad, attributes much of what he learned to Grandpa’s teachings. Grandpa treated him with the respect and caring that he gave to each of his own children. In embracing my dad, Grandpa showed him the importance of family, friendship, and a father’s love. His kind heart, joyful chuckle, and the glimmer in his hazel green eyes will live in our hearts as long as we shall love and remember him, forever.
